Direct Line started as a small telephone only operation founded by Peter Wood back in 1985, since then they have grown to become one of Britain's biggest car insurers employing over 9000 employees and delivering policies to over 5 million customers across the UK.
Direct Line since their inception have tried to cut out the middleman in order to push prices lower for their customers and in addition to car insurance they also sell, breakdown cover, home, travel, pet , life and critical illness insurance as well as mortgages, loans, savings and other financial products.
In recent years they have expanded into mainland Europe with business in Spain, Italy and Germany. In 1999 Direct Line bought Green Flag the UK's third largest breakdown cover provider. They have recently drawn attention by resisting the pressures of the insurance comparison industry to be featured on their sites. Currently they are not feature on any comparison site.
