Learner drivers to learn for longer.
If the ABI (Association of British Insurers) has it's
way then learner driver should take lessons for around a year. They
suggest this will cut around 1000 deaths and serious injuries a year.
Critics have branded the suggestion as unworkable and
suggested that the cost of learning to drive is expensive enough already
without the mandatory addition of more lessons. The scheme may save
money in the long run say supporters as the cost of insurance would
fall.
The ABI also called for limitations on the number of
passengers carried in the cars of newly qualified drivers and limitations
on driving at night.
