The excess is the cost of the claim that will be borne by the the policy holder. Excess can usually be decided by the customer before they purchase the insurance. Usually the higher the excess the lower the cost of the insurance. If for example a car repair costs £1000 and there is an excess of £200, the policy owner will pay £200 and the insurer will pay £800.
