The Land Rover was first
designed in 1948 by Maurice Wilks, the chief designer for Rover. He
based it roughly on the WWII American Willy's Jeep. The Land rovers
early models were all painted in green army surplus paint and due
to a shortage of steel in post war Britain was build of an alloy of
magnesium and aluminium which was readily available from from postwar
stocks used for aircraft production. This alloy had the advantage
that it did not rust.
The Land Rover is a variety
of different guides was the only model of Land Rover until the more
upmarket Range Rover was introduced in 1970. Since then a couple of
new models, the Discovery (or Disco as it is know affectionately )
and the Freelander were introduced in 1989 and 1998 respectively.
Land Rover was bought most
recently by Ford when BWM broke up Rover in 2000 and luckily to date
has not suffered the same fate as Rover. Rover has been bought by
Ford, not with a view of restarting production, but more to protect
the Land Rover name.
