| German
based Audi is now owned by the Volkswagen group. It was founded in 1899
by August Horch. Allegedly the name comes from the Latin Audi "I
hear" which has a similar meaning to the founder's surname which
means 'Hark' in German. Audi merged with 3 other German manufacturers
in 1932 to form Auto Union. The four interlocking rings of today's Audi
badge come from the Auto Union badge and represent this union of four
manufacturers. The company was bought by Damlier Benz in the late 1950s
and in turn sold to Volkswagen in 1964.
Audi's sporting heritage,
best exemplified perhaps by its world rally championship dominating
Audi Quattro, is still visible today in the suvival of the quattro name
and in cars like the Audi TT.
Although Audi are a prestige
car, many of the smaller model fall into the lower insurance groups.
Below are the insurance groups
for some popular Audi models. Note: Many insurance companies do not
use the insurance groups quoted by the ABI (Association of British Insurers).
